Abstrak

The phenomenon of religious fundamentalism in social protest movements demonstrates how religious identity is often used as both a symbol and a tool for mass mobilization. Ideally, religion serves as a source of peace and social solidarity, yet within the context of social protests, fundamentalism can instead trigger horizontal conflicts and reinforce identity exclusivity. This study employs a qualitative approach with a literature review method to analyze the dynamics of religious fundamentalism through the framework of social movement theory. The main focus lies on resource mobilization, issue framing, and political opportunities that enable religious movements to develop into organized social protests. The analysis shows that applying social movement theory offers a new perspective for understanding religious conflicts, as it explains the interconnection between religious ideology, mobilization strategies, and the surrounding political context. This research not only enriches the academic discourse on fundamentalism and religious conflict but also provides practical contributions to efforts for more constructive conflict resolution in the socio-political sphere.
